Robert “Pookie” Smith starred in the early 70’s on the hardwood teaming with future UCLA ALL American and NBA star, Marques Johnson to lead an undefeated Crenshaw High School Cougar’s team to their 2nd Los Angeles City Championship. Robert’s journey continued as he helped Jerry Tarkanian take UNLV to their first ever NCAA Final Four while leading the nation in free throws at 92%. He has been acknowledged as the best point guard in Runnin’ Rebel history. Robert played in the NBA from 1977-1984 which included stints with the Jazz, Spurs, Nuggets, Bucks and Cavs. In 1983 he was the MVP of the CBA and finished his playing days overseas from 1984-1992. Since his retirement from professional basketball, Robert has spent the last 27 years raising his family and grandkids while mentoring and coaching thousands of children and teens in the Las Vegas community. For the last decade, he’s been the voice, along with his broadcast partner John Sandler, of the UNLV Runnin Rebels.

On October 1, 2019 Robert “Pookie” Smith suffered a massive stroke and has been fighting valiantly to recover. His friends, Bill Smith and Robbie Curtis have formed “ TEAM ROBERT SMITH “ It’s purpose is to sponsor fundraising events that will help support the Smith family with their mounting medical bills.
